A groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new library was held on Saturday, May 12, immediately following the Oxford College Commencement. Participating in the ceremony were Oxford College Dean Stephen H. Bowen; Emory University President James W. Wagner; Associate Dean and College Librarian Kitty McNeill; and Hugh Tarbutton, Jr., Chair, Library Committee, Oxford Board of Counselors.
A 10,000 square foot addition combined with a complete renovation of the existing 20,000 square foot library building, scheduled for completion by the summer of 2013, “will offer a powerful combination of traditional resources, high technology, and well-designed spaces to build community, increase communication, and inspire achievement,” said Dean Bowen.
The current library will be closed from May 14 to June 18 so that all contents of the library as well as staff offices can be moved. The primary location for library services during the construction period will be Lovern Hall, the fellowship hall of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Pierce and Asbury streets, diagonally across from the Jolley Residential Center.
